DEATH OF AUTOTUNE KELLZ MY RESPONSE

First off, anyone who is familiar with my history knows I'm a HUGE R. Kelly fan & have been inspired by him since my early beginnings musically. So while some may take this as disrespect, those who truly listen to the lyrics will understand my urging him to go harder. I've been compared to R. Kelly since my career began while we all can recall R. Kelly stepping on the scene sounding AND looking JUST like Aaron Hall. He demolished his sound and then went on to build his own which was a mixture of many others. We all are familiar with his signature adlib "Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh" which he grabbed from Lenny Williams & let's not forget the "Bump & Grind" remix which started his Isley Brother's Vibe. Soon enough he assisted Ron Isley in becoming Mr. Biggs & while keeping Ronald close he kept him on his toes. The R. Kelly we all grew to love was innovative, witty, & trendsetting. If you were to say that R. Kelly has excited you musically as of late, I would question your ears. When I heard JayZ's "Death of Autotune" my first thought was when will R. Kelly stop using it; The King of R&B with a autotune filled mixtape (not to mention a auto tuned "Double Up" album) disappoints me. If throwing rocks at the throne wakes up the King, consider them thrown.

I just want R. Kelly back...

No need to explain, If Kellz isnt bothered (I am assuming not because he has responded) then everyone else should fall back...Its like Kanye said a yr ago about Rihanna forcing Beyonce to step her game up...thats needed or Artists become too comfortable and no longer satisfy the fans...
Keep doing you babe

i'm not gonna lie, when i first heard the song, i was like "wow, i didnt know him and r.kelly were beefing". But i do understand where you are coming from and its nothing wrong with expressing yourself. People are gonna talk regardless tho, but im sure you already know that :)

Anonymous said...

Thank You for clearing things up.. Those that are not true fans talked shit about D.O.A.... but thanks for giving them some history..

Anonymous said...

Dearest Trey,

You are so right...but I actually like auto-tone..it sounds so futuristic and yes, people over use it..but perhaps this is how they choose and prefer to express themselves. I get what you are saying though. Keep on keeping it real boo*

Well...sometimes the truth hurts...But it is the truth, nonetheless...

"If throwing rocks at the throne wakes up the king, consider them thrown" I love that line, and yep I agree. Im tired of the auto-tune. I havent heard the mixtape, but im sure its not great at all. keep doing what you doin, im sure if kellz hears DOA, he'll continue to do what he SHOULD be doing.

I was watching you live when u was talking about this and all that you said is so true. And like you said if this is what you have to do to get Kellz back then it is what it is. But yo you went HAM on this track

I feel T. Songz on this. R. Kelly's desperation to get back on the scene is what, I believe, caused him to wanna use autotune. Its not that he thought it was new and hott, and wanted to try it out. As a matter of fact, autotune have been out forever. Artist use it alot, but it was recently popularized by T-pain. When he initially came out with it, he was criticized for not being a real singer...NO EVERYBODY AND THEY MAMA WANNA USE IT. What Trey is saying is, he needs to stick to his craft and what he knows rather than following the trend of what the younger generations are doing.

At the end of the day, autotune is gonna be played out. But Kells will forever have his voice and individual style and that is what he needs to stick with. Mary J. Blidge recently did a song using autotune....NO COMMENT. People just need to stay in their lane.

Much Luv Trey...YUUUUUP!!!

I so agree being in the older generation to remember R.Kelly in the beginning of his career with Public Announcent and Aaron Hall when he broke away from GUY to do his solo thing. Its just different!!

Anonymous said...

Yes I understand we all want the real R kelly that can sang his ass off to come back. However I don't believe it is the death of the auto-tones because both T-pain and Kayne West whole Albums are auto-toned and even Kayne West latest video is in auto-tones and he produces for Jayz. So somebody is being a phony (at Kayne west and Jay Z) which is not cool at all.

GO THANKSGIVING HAM BABY!! Kells do him and you just do you. You still got your fans to hold you down.

I personally think ur track is hott. And YOU KNO But ppl are goigoing to hear it and make it out to be more than what they rlly are. Don't let the media get a hold to it! They love making things controversial and ppl eat that isht UP! I agree with u 100%. That autotune is irritating ALL of the time! Ppl say Kanye did it on his album, BUT I think he rlly did it saying "ok...y'all wanna play w/autotunes...lemme show y'all how it's REALLY supposed to be done!" Hopefully he (R.Kelly) doesn't take offense and reads b/w the lines to get the msg. If not...to hell wit him! lol, the more he continues to NOT b the original R.Kelly that we all loved, the more he's going to fade away. You just make sure your ass don't go singing wit that bullisht!!! lol Your voice is beautiful and I wanna hear it the way its supposed to sound! :)

I have to disagree Trey! I love you and all your music however times are chanGing. Why is everyone so afraid of Change!Auto Tune Has been pumping up the music industry and getting plenty of airtime. Just like people said down south music was dumb and lame however songs like Stanky leg and Swagg Surfin, or Gucci Mane and his crew and are taking over the radios and clubs. A slong as the music listeners are satisfied thats all that matters.

Anonymous said...

I want my R.Kelly back too! If you are the King, there is no need to act like the Jester, IMO. Kellz created a whole boxed collection that help- to create alot of the new millenium babies that listen to Trey, As a fan of both, I can appreciate what Trey has done. Hopefully Kellz takes note and comes back harder. There is still room for both.

Shanice said...

This whole thing has vexed my spirit lol hionestly i think yes it was disrespectful because i feel as if Kellz has been in the game for a while now. He has established great history to the point where he could do what he wants. R. Kelly is getting older and it's to the point where using auto tune has become a trend for most artist, so i say hell if that's what is then by all means let him do what he wants. No one made a big deal about it wj=hen wayne started to use it. when we all know t pain brought it back, when it was originally Zap and Roger! Trey and several other artist has used auto tune...and so what . Hov acn kellz den had their dsagreements , but yet and still Hov has been in the game for a min as well, much longer than Trey. I love and adore Trey and his music very much and never will stop, but i just feel some things are better left alone. If Kelly den made it this far n the game then im pretty sure he doesn't need nobody to wake him up. R. kelly is a genuine atist and i that's what initially grabbed my attention to Trey as an artist cause his lyrical demenoir was much more simlar to kelly's. then i later learned he looked up to him.

Anonymous said...

I must agree with you TREY, that R.Kelly must come harder. I have much love for Kells but autotune under rates who he is as an artist.Kells can't expect to be as revelant as he was b4 the hiatus with shit we alreay being oversaturated in. You got to GO HAM OR STAY HOME!!!! YUUUUUUP

Alright i dunno if u read comments, but let me say this...Trey u startin 2 fall into the catagories of all the other R&B artists. I mean i was a fan as soon as u came out even ur underground shit (young n heartless mixtape) I gotta make it was a fuckn classic. Even though u didnt get the reck u deserved u killed that shit. The whole cd had meaning, it had balance, it was about a bunch of shit other then jus sex. Dnt get me wrong i love sex more then the next nig (PAUSE) but my nigga i kno u got more substance then that on a cd, i mean seriously trey day showed no growth as an artist....Seemed like u were jus tryna sell records. Every song was bout sex, now im hearing all ur remixs (covers) they all about sex, or fuckn a chick in hotel room...Thats all good my nigga, but damn wheres the variety at? U the nicest R&B dude out real talk, ur voice is gonna put u on top of the game (pause) but as a REAL FAN of your past work all im askin is can we get some more variety i mean im a Male listenin 2 ur music, i kno u look out for the ladies n what not my nig, But trey day didnt have no songs like (comin for you, hatin love, gotta go, gotta make it, kinda lovin) all those songs were classic hits in my eyes. Shit i hope u got back 2 what u used 2 make instead of this mainstream stuff man. Good luck with the next album i hope its fire like the 1st one

Boy please! And who are you to tell another artist they need to get it together. Why don't you focus on your own career that isn't no more than D-list. You are not anywhere near R. Kelly's status. Your catalog looks NOTHING like his. He made timeless classics. I highly doubt he needs your advice. For you to try to downplay R.Kelly with the comparison...please. After his Public Announcement days he bought his OWN style...Ya know, the style you try so hard to imitate. Good publicity stunt but....Epic fail, Trey.

Why didn't I know about this blog??? Lol, well you have surpassed this guy KELLS, so who cares what he thinks or feel. I love him too, but I have been nothing, but disappointed with his last album and that horrid mixtape (thumbs down)! With each album you have grown and I am so happy that you are continuing to grow as an artist ;) Much success with your career and I will continue to be following....much love baby!

Very deep. That really getz you thinking. Maybe people are now-a-dayz focusing on getting money and doing that "thing" that makes it. Instead of making something brand new that riskz standing out and having to work harder to maintain. I understand everything is recycled. The world has been going on forever. You still can put your heart and soul into something and make it yourz. I enjoyed that blog. I believe I'm goin to come back for more. Thanks for that =] Your very talented and your voice is heaven. I love your music.

"n everybody talks, n everybody listens, n sumhow the truth just always ends up missing..."

when u first posted the track i knew it was gonna start trouble...i love you and i understand your reasoning for the track but at the same time the words were so harsh (arguably) that of course people half listening would take it out of context...you want the old Kellz back but you as an artist yourself you should know that people reinvent themselves over time..whether we as listeners like it or not. Lets not forget, Kellz is a legend in the game, he can use autotune if and as MUCH as he chooses...At the end of the day I love the track, i love you and been a fan since I first saw your "Gotta Make it" vid on BET, and in my eyes you are the king of the REMIX and of R&B. Wear that crown proud baby the fans love you and everything you do.

I've been going HAM on blog sites all morning trying to get your point across. The media is going to portray this issue as more than what it is naturally because that is what they do. People are going to side with R.Kelly instantly because they aren't familiar with how hard you work or how talented you are. As a fan I know what measures you take to make sure people respect your name and your craft, and it isn't easy. You show us mad love and always let it known that your appreciative of us as well. MOST artists fail to do so. They label you as cocky and arrogant and bash you for taking a blow at a Legend. I believe that if making this track to wake up someone who is more than capable of producing good music is the way to let the rest of R&B know that your coming STRONG and HUNGRY than so be it.
"I'm still hungry, you must be full" is DEF a true statement.
I've been a fan since day one..i idolize your talent, maturity and humbleness as an artist and as a person. This uproar don't scare me none...cuz at the end of the day I know you will still succeed.
I can't stress it enough...people better wake up and smell the coffee and realize that quality music still does exist. Prepare for Trey Songz to deliver that.
Get familiar...and GET READY. 8/04
LUH YOU TREY!!

I am not familiar with the music game other than I recognize good music when I hear it which enables me to support artist like you and R. Kelly. Whether it's auto tune or any other sounds that are used to make a record, songs from both of you and artist like you have inspired, lifted and gave hope to many adoring fans across the world. Don't take lightly the people "fans" that look up to both of you and who may the next"king" or "queen" of R&B. Let's remember why you got into this game.

Lola Bee said...

In my opjunion your intentions and the actual song differ so greatly. You say that you want to bring the best in Kells back out. The song is not a good representation of that. The song is called DEATH of kells, not rebirth. Im sure that R Kelly may come back harder, that is if he even gives a F, and show why he's been in the game so long. But this song seems like its "you" coming for his spot, and claiming his title. To say it was done for "him" so that he would go harder on his next songs, would be giving your song way too much credit.

...it is very strange to me how BET (well media in general) takes something so small and runs with it. Look what it did for Tupac and Biggie, it's very sad. Trey made a very good point and a even better statement by releasing this song.

Look what happens when some of our greats (New Edition, Monica, Charlie Wilson and even Luther) try to "keep up with the times" they forget what made them hot in the beginning. Or even Usher with his latest album or as I like to call it "let me hurry up and put some songs together on this album before people forget who I am album casue right now Chris Brown is running things" album. And yes I'll even say that goes for Beyonce too. Her last LP was no where near what we've come to expect from her. It was good, but it wasn't GREAT like we know she can be. When these "legends" see someone else moving into their "spotlight" they get defensive and stupid and do stupid things like put out a stupid project and expect fans to go along with it. No we're not, "REAL FANS" are going to be upfront and honest with you and let you know that sh*t was wack so try it again.

2009 and beyond doesn't need the "artist formally known as R. Kelly," it needs the "Half on a Baby" R. Kelly. Some people need that extra fire under their butt to realize what they are doing wrong, and R. Kelly knew he was wrong for that autotune mixtape. So like Trey said, "If throwing rocks at the throne wakes up the King, consider them thrown....I just want R. Kelly back..."

PERIOD!!!

I think you made your point very well. I also can understand the views of the Kellz fan [love r kelly always have always will] BUT there is a major difference in reinventing yourself and just straight up band wagon shit. Auto tune should have been kept as a nice little effect for ad libs; it wasnt meant for niggas to make entire songs with. Seriously, there is no defending that bull. Why does it always have to come down to beef? Why can't people just see it as two artist having some healthy competition to bring the best out of each other. ::sigh: the media fucks everything up.......always a bad apple.

Great remixes Trey, keep doing your thing and [let me ride the bad wagon for a quick sec] go ham! lol

Good points! I don't fuck with Kellz, 'cause he's a pedophile, but you definitely did a great job describing what he's done musically for better and worse over the years. I'm sorry Trey, but I'm gonna have to disagree with you on this one. I definitely think that you were trying to diss R.Kelly. You basically gave him a backhanded compliment. If you felt this way about R.Kelly, I think that you should have reached out to him. Called him on the phone or something. Like, "Yo Kellz I need to holla at you about something". Trey, just keep it real you just wanted some publicity. lol It's funny how you're talking sh*t about him, but you've previously worked with R.Kelly. R.Kelly, is a legend! He doesn't have to prove himself to anyone. He's been in the game, when you had milk on your breath. I just think that certain things aren't necessary. Word of advice, Trey just focus on you own career. If you feel like R.Kelly haven't been on his sh*t lately, then this should give you even more shine.

Mr. Man said...

Trey all day! I support you cause you bring back real R&B for the male singers. R.Kelly fell off after Chocolate Factory, he's been sitting for too long becoming complacent. T-Pain got his own lane, cause he's to uptempo for R&B but doesn't rap enough for Hip-Hop. But he's created this confusion in the game where people like kellz think that's what the people want. I appreciate that you still coming out like you a new artist and realeasing songs every week, keep in comin. Trey is gonna be the Lil Wayne of R&B this year: 1 million first week.

I have to say that I totally agree with you. You decide how you start your career. You can start it based on a trend (which only lives as long as the day it started) or you start it with your talent. Nowadays people are becoming stars w/o talent. I mean it works, the music is hot...but there is no longevity. R. Kelly started his career by showing the world how talented he is, so for him to surrender to a trend...is scary, really something that he doesn't have to do...it's a cop out.....in my opinion

Anonymous said...

This is real. Kellz is a a talented artist, but he's not a god. There shall be no false idols. He's not untouchable. How many in favor of R.Kelly even have his new release and if you do , do you REALLY like it?
